Bio of David C. Whipple

David Whipple, a former State Champion Hockey player from Viewmont High School, graduated from the University of Utah in 1985 with a custom degree in business and organizational management.  He soon began his career selling small businesses, training under Broker/Manager Ralph Edwards and Bill Tabor at Venture Resources in Salt Lake City.  He quickly recognized a gap in business valuation and the disconnect between academic business valuation methods and the real-world factors that truly dictated a small business’s selling price and success. Also, how the theories and methods taught in the University, and what was actually being done in the business and how it related to the valuation. Within a year, his transaction quality and volume earned him a position on a presidential committee, distinguishing him among Western states agents. He subsequently attended law school for a year before founding Target Software Inc., dedicated to developing best-practice software tools aligned with business value principles.

Early in his business career, David frequently encountered the question, “How could I increase my company’s value?”  He observed that business owners often focused on performance, profits, or effectiveness, rather than directly on business value. Often times the business would have profitable sales but no business value. This realization sparked his mission to guide small and midsize business owners toward their goals by prioritizing business value. Over the next two decades he worked in over 44 different industries helping small business owners maximize their business value.

Through consulting and conversations with business owners, experienced buyers, brokers, and loan officers, he meticulously documented insights, forming the foundation of his book, “14 Immutable Laws of Business Value,” that he published in 2008, and related software (2013). This experience provided a deep understanding of how businesses operate within the framework of business value.

Inspired by “22 Immutable Laws of Marketing,” David conducted extensive research with business owners, sellers, buyers, and brokers.  His findings revealed consistent patterns and methods for maximizing business value, yet many business owners were unaware of or not utilizing these core intangibles that related to business value.  Conversely, business owners and sophisticated buyers leveraged this knowledge to their advantage. To address this disparity, David articulated these communication-based business principles and laws for corporations, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations in his e-book, “14 Immutable Laws of Business Value.”  His aim is to empower owners and management to implement value-driven initiatives to maximize business value. Since, he already learned how the principles and laws in the book, 14 Immutable Laws of Business Value” bring more business value to the closing table.

Over the years, David has consistently helped business owners achieve significantly higher sale prices and buyers find targets. As founder of Growth Concepts LLC, he shares his expertise globally from his base in Provo, Utah. He also provides executive training, offering business owners a fresh perspective on their initiatives. Learn more about maximizing business value
